After not too bad of a sleep on the train, we arrived in Hue at 8:30 am. We had arranged for a taxi to our hotel when we booked, but getting off the train you must determine who is actually your driver. Everyone tries to guess where you are staying so they might be able to lure you into their vehicle. Finally someone has my name and hotel on their phone, and we go with him.
Hue is a smaller city, and we go for a walk in the afternoon, having a nice lunch at a French restaurant. The price is food is very low in Vietnam. Finally cheap food, but it is so hot and our stomachs are a bit off, we are down to one meal a day. How disappointing. A walk by the military museum reminds us that we are in a communist country that did defeat the US. The boys had their first experience of being the blond haired fair skinned kids in Asia. A family of Chinese tourist pinched the cheek of an annoyed Levi, and then one of the men had his picture taken with Nate, then they pulled all the boys in for a family picture, replacing them as their parents. No money offer was given for the boys, so they ended up still coming back to the hotel with us. We have had many a local look at us and say, three boys, you very lucky.
That night we check out the night market. On the river, there are about 50 identical dragon boats all offering a one hour dinner cruise. We love the selling technique. Would you like a cruise - no thanks - okay, you come with me then. And this gets repeated constantly as we walk along.
