Today is our big temple day. We start with Angkor Thom, which is one of the larger Angkors (citys), taking up a 3 km by 3 km area. Entrance through the first gates gives one the chance to ride elephants. They look in poor shape, and the writings talk about the elephants not necessarily being treated really well. The royal palace or Bayeon is in the middle. After Angkor Thom, we head for the post card Angkor of Ta Prohm. It has been kept in a natural state, giving people the opportunity to see what Angkors looked like when discovered by the western world in the 19th century. The trees growing in, on and through the walls and buildings are amazing. Beautiful to see, difficult to photograph as there are multiple bus loads of Chinese tourist present. Line ups for photos have little meaning. We stop at one other temple that Nate is not allowed on as he is too young. Nate and I therefore sneak in the back side and have a look around. Nate is very worried about breaking the law and reluctantly goes with me.
